GOLDEN ERA RECORDED MUSIC project (May 29, 2019): The Music of Alan Hovhaness

The GOLDEN ERA RECORDED MUSIC project continues on Wednesday, May 29, 7-8 pm at the AUDIO & ART showroom, 21 Thomson Avenue, Glens Falls. We will be hearing the music of Armenian-American composer ALAN HOVHANESS (1911-2000).

Born and raised in the Boston suburbs, Hovhaness received a classical conservatory training. By his mid 20's he had come to feel his compositions were too tame, derivative and conventional. He destroyed them all and embarked on a new path, inspired by a developing awareness of his Armenian Christian roots and the unusual flavors and tonalities of Armenian music. His keen mind began exploring the exotic music of Japan and other ethnic traditions. New music began to form in his mind and, by his death, he had composed almost 700 works, including over 100 symphonies. Hovhaness' music is like no other, and his musical odyssey bears a striking similarity to that of contemporary Estonian composer Arvo Paert.

This event is free and open to all.
