GOLDEN ERA RECORDED MUSIC project (Oct 30, 2019): Penguin Cafe Orchestra

Tonight's Golden Era Recorded Music presentation will be the MUSIC of the PENGUIN CAFE ORCHESTRA. Founded around 1970 by a group of London classical musicians who were out of work and looking for something new, the PCQ began making music from "scratch," using found and discarded instruments (often from a London street) and improvising as a prelude to their compositions. They soon found a following and several marvelous LP recordings were created. The leader of the band, Simon Jeffes wrote:

"I was on a beach sunbathing and suddenly a poem popped into my head. It started out: "I am the proprietor of the Penguin Cafe, I will tell you things at random, and it went on about how the quality of randomness, spontaneity, surprise and irrationality in our lives is a very precious thing. If you suppress these things, you kill off what's most important."

The music comes from this starting place and will amaze you with its poetic invention.

We meet from 7 to 8 pm at the FIBHORN GALLERY, 21 Thomson Avenue, Glens Falls. Coffee, tea and comestibles. Free and open to the public.
